-
- Thank you for downloading PanoSplatter version. This readme file contains
- important information about this tool.
-
- 1) Description
- --------------
-
- PanoSplatter is an experimental tool aimed at creating 360░x180░ panoramic
- images from a set of 36 mm photos. It allows the creation of cubic panoramas
- without using any fisheye lens or any expensive other equipement.
-
- The creation of the panorama is intuitive : you only have to import your photos
- and try to place them at the correct position in the 3D view.
-
- Once you have successfully placed all the photos, you can then generate the
- panorama in these formats:
-
- - JPEG or BMP cubic bitmap
- - Standalone player (exe)
- - Web page Java applet
-
-
- 2) System Requirements
- ----------------------
-
- This software needs the following configuration to be run:
-
- Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2K, XP
- A 466 Mhz processor (466 Mhz or better recommended)
- 128 MB RAM
- 8MB Hard Disk Space
-
-
- 3) Controls
- -----------
-
- Pan : Mouse + Right Button or Arrows
- Add a photo : RETURN
- Select a photo : Left Mouse Button
- Stretch a photo : CTRL + Arrows (while selected)
- Remove a photo : DEL (while selected)
- Validate a photo position : SPACE
- Zoom : Wheel or Mouse + SHIFT
- Bank : Mouse + Right Button + SHIFT
- Help : F1
-
-
- 4) Calibration
- --------------
-
- Before being fully productive with PanoSplatter, you first need to
- calibrate the program settings according to your camera.
-
- Every camera lens makes a barrel distortion on the pictures. To
- figure it out, take a photo of something which is known as vertical
- (the best example would be a wallpaper with some repetitive vertical
- bands drawn on it). You must be in front of the object while taking
- the photo. The resulting photo should show you that the vertical
- parts of the object are not vertical anymore, but slightly curved.
-
- In PanoSplatter, you must select the photo and adjust the "b" parameter
- of the right side panel in order to correct the distortion.
-
- Don't forget to save your settings in order to save the calibration.
-
- Another common issue which can occur with cameras is called Vignetting.
- The edges of the photo gradually fade to black, which can be annoying
- when stictching images for a panorama. PanoSplatter handles a vignetting
- correction system, by gradually unfading the photos. You will have to
- manually set those parameters for each photo which needs it : v1 represent
- the radius from which the unfading will start, and v2 represent the
- intensity factor applied.
-

-
- 5) Tips & Tricks
- ----------------
-
- - When making a panorama, all the photos need to have the same saturation level, so
- you need to disable the automatic saturation adjustment of the camera. You should
- lock it to a median value (between the brightest area and the darkest one of the
- panorama). Take also care to the sun while taking the photos, it could damage your
- camera !
-
- - Take your photos by columns, beginning from the horizontal point of view. I
- usually begin by a middle photo, then I go up, and after I go down. Then I
- proceed to the next column.
-
- - When creating your panorama in the program, start by the first horizontal row
- of pictures. The most "touchy" part of the creation of the panorama consists in
- ensuring that the last photo of the row correctly joins with the first photo of
- the row. You can trick a bit by using the stretch photo commands, and the problem
- should not be relevant if you have correctly calibrated the software.
-
- - Depending on the focal lens of your camera, a full set of pictures covering a
- complete 360░ panoramic area could badly overlap in PanoSplatter. To fix this, you
- must adjust the panorama stretch factor in the right control panel.
